Katherine Diffenbaugh - Survivor

In June 2005, I had breast reduction surgery. When they did the biopsy on the tissue that they removed, Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) was found in my left breast. I was devastated. The first person I called was my friend Terri Buser (also a survivor). I underwent radiation because they didn't know exactly where the tissue was located in the breast. I feel really blessed not only by having this surgery but that my friend Terri knew that feeling of devastation. I always wear something that signifies breast cancer; whether it is a piece of jewelry or clothing. I am blessed to be a survivor and let other people know that you don't have to have a family history in order to have breast cancer. I have signed up for the Race for the Cure three times but was only able to walk twice. I think it is so awesome to see more and more people doing the walk. We can never give up hope that a cure will be found for breast cancer. I believe that prayer, the support of friends, family and other survivors have given me that hope. I want to thank Susan G. Komen for the Cure for giving everyone hopes that someday our loved ones will not have to go worry about breast cancer.
